Phil 321-t
Ethics and Theater

Ethics and Theater

Does Hamlet have a moral obligation to avenge his father's murder? Should Professor Harold Hill be punished for his fraud? Is Tartuffe right that sin only counts if someone sees it? Plays, both comic and tragic, are driven by conflict. The conflicts themselves are often moral in character, and the resolution of the conflict requires ethical choices that often reveal our most fundamental values. Ethics and Theatre will combine the pleasure and excitement of attending live theatre in arguably the greatest theatre city in the world, with the challenge of exploring and discussing the principles that frame moral choice. Classes will meet in the mornings, Monday through Thursday, 10:00 AM-noon, with field trips in the afternoon that relate to our work and plays in the evenings. The course will include both large group and small group meetings, with either Dr. Hinman (students registered for Ethics credit) or Dr. Hay (students registered for English or Theatre credit.) Fulfills the GE ethics, fine arts or literature requirement.
