Ethics Across the CurriculumUniversity of San Diego~ Summer 2000

Prof. Larry Hinman of the University of San Diego, Sandra Foy and the Weigland Foundation have assembled several high school educators from the Archdiocese of Seattle to examine ways in which ethics can be taught across the curriculum.  The following comments are some of the highlights from our conference.

Process of Formation of Adolescent Moral Identity
Student centered questions that are central to ethical development:

• Parents-  How do you satisfy my parents expectations of me academically, ethically, athletically and spiritually?

• Teachers- How do you meet the expectations and standards of my teachers and other mentors in my life?

• Friends- How do you make ethical choices dealing with standing up against mainstream teenage norms and the moral anxiety of conformity?

• Faith- How do you maintain my centeredness in God as a compass for my ethical life?

• Greater Culture- How do you confront the forces of cultural materialism?  The rat race?  Emphasis on external appearances and status? 

Focal Questions:
1.)  What is the source of happiness?
2.)  What does it mean to live the "Good Life?"
3.)  What are cross curricular academic links for holistic ethical education?
